Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about our training methods, classes, or policies? We've compiled a list of common inquiries to help you find the answers you need quickly.

At Gables Bark & Learn, we exclusively use positive reinforcement, which means we reward desired behaviors with something the dog values (treats, praise, toys, play). This method encourages dogs to repeat good behaviors because they associate them with positive outcomes. It's a humane, effective, and fun way to build a strong, trusting bond between you and your dog, without the need for force or intimidation.
For our group classes, please bring your dog on a flat collar or harness and a 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes, please). You'll also need plenty of small, soft, high-value treats (cut into pea-sized pieces), a chew toy or Kong to help keep your dog settled during breaks, and a mat or blanket for your dog to lie on. Don't forget water for both you and your dog, plus a water bowl! For private sessions, your trainer will advise you on specific items.
To ensure the health and safety of all dogs, we require proof of up-to-date vaccinations for Rabies, Distemper (DHPP/DA2PP), and Bordetella (kennel cough) for all dogs participating in group classes or private sessions at our facility. Puppies must have completed at least their second round of vaccinations. Please bring a copy of your dog's vaccination records to the first class or email them to info@gablesbarkandlearn.com prior to your appointment.
We understand that life happens! While we do not offer refunds or make-up sessions for missed classes in a group course, we provide detailed handouts and follow-up emails after each session to help you catch up on any material you missed. If you anticipate missing multiple classes, please consider our flexible private training sessions as an alternative. For any emergencies, please contact us directly.
Absolutely! We encourage family participation. Children over the age of 8 are welcome to attend group classes with a supervising adult, provided they can remain calm and focused during the session to not distract other participants or dogs. For children under 8, please contact us to discuss suitability, as our primary concern is the safety and learning environment for all. We believe involving the whole family helps create a consistent training approach at home.
